We continue our series of visits to artists’ estates, studios and workplaces across Berlin.

Following our first visit to the Michel Majerus Estate in February, we are visiting the Hannah-Höch-Haus in Heiligensee.

Höch bought the house in 1939, at a time when her work had been branded “degenerate” by the National Socialists and her possibilities to exhibit had become increasingly restricted. Heiligensee became a place of retreat, work and protection, where she continued her artistic practice and preserved works, documents and materials through the years of National Socialism.

Together with members of the Förderverein that today cares for and inhabits the site, we will learn about Höch’s life and work, the garden she shaped over four centuries, and what it means to live with and preserve the traces of an artist today. The garden — sometimes described as a kind of living collage — will be at the centre of our visit.

The visit includes the garden and a room dedicated to Hannah Höch in the neighbouring building, followed by a short talk on her life and work.
