"da zeigt Ingrid Wiener was es mit dem Knoten beim Weben auf sich hat und ich zeige warum das Universum ein Weberknoten ist. und was das alles mit Musik zu tun hat…" (Ingrid Wiener shows what the knot in weaving is all about, and I explain why the universe is a weaver’s knot — and what all of this has to do with music…)
The musician and artist Thomas Brinkmann explores connections between weaving, music, computer science, and artistic practice in his lecture Der Weberknoten. Drawing on historical references as well as his own work, he unfolds a network of relations spanning textile techniques, algorithmic structures, and sonic processes. His engagements and collaborations with Ingrid and Oswald Wiener also play a central role. Based on a mind map, Brinkmann develops these connections as an open, associative structure that links different fields together.
Thomas Brinkmann is a conceptual electronic musician and artist who lives in Berlin and the Eifel region. He studied Fine Art at the Düsseldorf Art Academy under Oswald Wiener, Friedrich Wolfram Heubach, and Jannis Kounellis. He also studied, among other places, at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Perugia, which he left again after three days.
Brinkmann participated in Documenta X (Hybrid Work Space) in 1997, as well as in numerous other exhibitions and performances, including at PS1 New York, the Cité de la musique / Paris La Villette, Palazzo Grassi in Venice, Tate Tanks in London, among others. He also took part in what was described (by Oswald Wiener, together with Ingrid Wiener) as the worst* “Rarely Heard Music” concert in Cologne.
He is known for Klick and his Variations, a series of performances in which he manipulates the locked grooves of vinyl LPs and uses them as sequencers, or plays records with two tonearms in shifted alignment and slowed down.
Brinkmann has released more than 60 records and CDs of experimental and electronic music, including What You Hear (Is What You Hear) (2015), A Thousand Keys (2017), and Raupenbahn (2019) on Editions Mego in Vienna, where another album is set to be released in 2026. Various written publications have also appeared, including with Non-Copyriot / Mille Plateaux.
